Meet a Team Member: Bruce Nelson

How did you get where you are today?

  1. It might be and over used phases but I had a clear vision of where I wanted to be at this point.  I knew coming out of undergrad (and probably before that), that I would obtain my CPA, a Master’s degree, pursue a career in consulting and have my own firm by 30.  I missed a couple deadlines along the way but never lost focus on what I was going to accomplish.
  2. RTE 22 to the Parkway East through town.  Carnegie exit.  Stop at Starbucks and end up at the office.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

My marriage.  I started dating Shawn in high school, somehow made it through the college years and got married at 22.  She has challenged me and is stabilizing force that has allowed me to accomplish my personal and career goals.

What are some common misconceptions about what we do?

I think it goes back to the term we are “computer guys”.  First and foremost we are a diverse group of individuals with varying backgrounds and experiences.  We have an in depth understanding of the strategic and operational issues in various industries.  We are analyst and problem solvers.  The technology we implement is simply a tool to solve a challenge that has been identified.

What is the last article you read relating to technology?

I have read a number of technology articles lately and the themes all revolve around Cloud, and honestly/unfortunately none were that memorable.  I have read two excellent books lately.  The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg and Service, A Navy SEAL at War by Marcus Luttrell.  The first provides data and insight as to why people do what they do and the second reminds of us on what the human spirit is capable of if we put things that are bigger than us ahead of our own needs and desires.
