Recent Phishing Scams: Protect Your Accounts and Data

By: Chris Bowman

At Vertilocity, we take the security of our clients seriously. Recently, we’ve identified two sophisticated phishing scams targeting both individuals and businesses, posing as trusted services like Microsoft and Google. These scams are designed to trick you into revealing sensitive information, but with the right knowledge, you can stay protected.

Here’s what you need to know about these scams and how to safeguard your information.

Microsoft 365 Phishing Scam: Fake Subscription Renewal

One of the scams we’ve detected involves a fraudulent email that appears to come from ms-noreply@microsoft.com, warning that your Microsoft 365 subscription will be renewed unless you take action by calling a provided phone number. The email looks convincing, but the phone number is fake, and the scammers aim to collect personal information from anyone who calls.

What to Do:

  • Do not call the number or respond to the email.
  • If you’re unsure whether the email is legitimate, contact Vertilocity at 833-246-7500 or MSSP@vertilocity.com for verification and guidance on next steps.

Google Account Scam: AI-Powered Deception

This scam is even more advanced, using AI technology to trick Google users. It starts with a password recovery email, followed by a phone call from a fake “Google Support” number. The AI-powered voice claims that your account is at risk—either because someone falsely reported you as deceased or because there’s suspicious activity from another country. The scammers will then ask for your password and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) token.

What to Do:

  • Never give out your password or MFA token over the phone, no matter how urgent the request seems.
  • If you receive such a call, contact Vertilocity immediately for assistance.

Tips to Keep Your Information Safe

Here are a few steps to protect yourself and your business from phishing scams:

  1. Check the email address carefully: Look for any small changes in the sender’s address.
  2. Don’t rush to respond: Scammers often pressure you to act quickly. Take time to verify the message.
  3. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Adding this extra layer of security can help prevent unauthorized access to your accounts.
  4. Reach out to Vertilocity: When in doubt, contact us for guidance. We’re here to help.

If you receive any suspicious emails or phone calls, or if you have concerns about your account security, don’t hesitate to contact Vertilocity. You can reach us at 833-246-7500 or MSSP@vertilocity.com for assistance.
