Spring Cleaning Your Tech Devices

Although the weather in Pittsburgh does not reflect it, spring is on its way! When this time of year comes around, we think about “spring-cleaning”. We go through our houses, try to de-clutter and clean the walls and ceilings and windows, and anything else in our homes that we may not have given love to all winter. What we should, and maybe don’t as often, consider is spring-cleaning our computers.

Just as we can’t expect to run our houses properly when they are messy, we cannot run our computers properly if we don’t do something to clean them up. Here are three things we recommend you do to boost your computer’s productivity this spring:

  1. Clean Up Files. Free up space on your PC by storing your files in OneDrive.

OneDrive is a great cloud storage service to store your files, like photos, videos, or documents. By storing these files in OneDrive, you can free up space on your PC.

  1. Tune It Up. Just like a car, computers need a little tune-up every now and then to make sure they are running efficiently.

Make sure your software is up to date. Updated software will ensure programs run smoother and reduce the risk of security concerns.

You can also defragment files to speed things up a bit. Windows 10 users can search for “Defragment and Optimize Drives” in their Start menu to run.

  1. Avoid Unread Message Overload. Get your inbox under control – and keep it that way.

Utilize the Rules feature in Outlook. It is a simple way to keep your inbox orderly. Set up your inbox so that certain mails will always automatically go in specific folders or send those notes you know you will delete right to the trash bin.

Sweep in Outlook on the web is a tool that can help you quickly get rid of unwanted mail. Delete emails in bulk with the Sweep feature or create a rule for deleting certain emails so you don’t have to do it manually.

Unsubscribe anything you signed up for but don’t read. In Outlook on the web, you can easily unsubscribe with just one click, all without leaving your inbox.

With these few tips, you will be able to set yourself up on a great path to keeping your devices clean and healthy. If you have any questions regarding cleaning up your devices, contact our help desk!
